Sat 26 July: Lumen Print & Resist Dye Workshop

A hands-on session exploring overlooked everyday objects through lumen printing, followed by a collective resist dye activity to create shared memories on fabric.

Event Summary:

In a white-cube space that resembles a factory, we construct a new kind of “open panoramic prison,” where each artist becomes a window in its architecture. Visitors are invited to move freely through the space, looking through each artwork to consider: What is amplified under different cultural lenses and personal narratives? And what is left unseen?

This experiment explores the power of “selective visibility,” where the viewer becomes both observer and the observed. Drawing on Michel Foucault’s theory, we are reminded that visibility is never neutral—it is shaped by identity, culture, and perception. Are our ways of seeing shaped by personal stories, or structured by invisible systems of power?

Curated by Zhiwu Zhu and Yurui Shi, co-presented by CHINCHINART, with special thanks to executive curator Li Ziqi. Windows Granted brings together a global group of 27 artists working across installation, painting, sculpture, photography, video, and experimental forms. Their practices respond to shifting ideas of society, culture, and identity. Here, artworks function not only as objects, but as “windows” into thoughts, memories, and layered perspectives.

Through a fluid curatorial approach, Windows Granted dissolves the boundaries of geography, medium, and aesthetic language, staging a dialogue between East Asian traditions and Western visual cultures. More than an exhibition, it is a proposition—a question: How do we see one another? And can we truly open the windows that frame our understanding?
