About

A Goodly Company is an exhibition of the materially and conceptually diverse work of 18 artists brought together to make merry in the ASC Gallery. The title of the exhibition is borrowed from the work of Ethel de Rossignol, whose jewel hued paintings are in the collection of the College of Psychic Studies, but here it encompasses works of a more earth-bound character as well as those reaching for the heavens.

The gallery is imagined as a site where the works, this itinerant company of players, have come together to tell their tales and proclaim wonders. Zoomorphism and the other than human are present alongside the glories of the natural world but not every note is sunny, some pieces reference the darkness of arterial blood or the deep alchemy of a loamy metamorphosis. Rather than pastoral, think para-pastoral.

A delight in making is evident in each of the works. The resulting baroque variety of materials, methods and artistic disciplines run the gamut of the exhibition, expertly wielded for the optimum expression of the conceptual peculiarities of each work. Celebration is the curatorial theme, a robust enjoyment that is a call to resilience. This can-do spirit cocks a snook at despair and instead proposes a party. Come and dance with us.
