The Judges

(Listed in alphabetical order of Last Name)

Matthew Burrows, MBE

A contemporary British painter, and founder of the globally influential ArtistSupport Pledge. His work is characterised by layered, ritualistic landscapes on textured supports, and he was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s 2020 Birthday Honours for his service to the arts. Burrows studied at Birmingham School of Art and earned his MA in painting at the Royal College of Art in 1995, and is represented by Vigo Gallery in London.

• Leslie De Canchy

Based in Paris since 2025, Leslie de Canchy works as an independent curator and cultural event organiser, while also overseeing diverse interior design and decoration projects integrating art collections. Leslie is also President of Art2Cure, a Luxembourg-based non-profit association that organises exhibitions to raise funds for biomedical research, particularly in neurodegenerative diseases, while supporting artists. She previously directed Luxembourg Art Week until 2023 and ran her own gallery in Bridel until 2012, championing emerging figures in the Luxembourg art scene.

• Matthew Olivier

Visual artist and storyteller, known for his narrative-driven figurative painting sand the ground-breaking “ALGORITHM” project: a large-scale, social-media native installation seen by over 30 million people monthly. His output spans painting, writing, and social-platform storytelling, with institutional collaborations including M+, Munch Museum, Palazzo Maffei, Visit Flanders, and a brand partnership with Dior.

• Conor Rush

Artist and Founder of Starving Artists, which he launched in 2022 after completing his MA in Creative Practice at Leeds Arts University. Starving Artists offers curated opportunities, mentoring, and an accessible opportunities platform. Conor also made it to the final ten for the 2023 Deutsche Bank Awards for Creative Entrepreneurs.

Together, these judges bring a rich mix of artistic practice, digital innovation, gallery direction, printmaking & painting excellence, and artist support initiatives - ensuring Materiality reflects a diverse and well-rounded perspective.

• Lara Bowen

Artist, Curator & Gallery founder (Lara Bowen Contemporary, Hove). Educated atHastings and Oxford Brookes, she returned to Brighton in 2000 to establish her studio and gallery. Her characterful abstract still-lifes and large colour-field works evoke memory, emotion, and lyrical presence. Her gallery supports both emerging and established artists across many medias; from oils and silkscreen to sculpture, championing emotionally resonant, contemporary work.

• Hanna ten Doornkaat

A UK-based German artist and co-founder of WhiteNoise_Projects. Her work blurs the boundaries between drawing and painting through a meditative process of repetitive, layered mark-making. Working across a range of materials, including textiles, her practice investigates the limits of perception, memory, and the spatial dynamics of line. The integration of both process and concept plays a central role in her creative approach. With a background in sculpture and installation, she brings a three-dimensional awareness to her two-dimensional works and curatorial projects. Alongside her artistic practice, she is also recognised for curating thoughtful group exhibitions that foster dialogue across disciplines, connecting emerging and mid-career artists.

• Rowan Siddons

Printmaker, installer, curator, and Founder of No PlaceArt. His work - rooted in explorations of place, non-place, and psycho geography - springs from his printmaking studies and continues to guide his curatorial vision. Siddons built No Place Art as an artist-led initiative for meaningful platforms and exhibition opportunities, shaping a space that champions community, creative freedom, and imaginative transformation.

The selection process was dynamic in the best sense, many perspectives
brought together with openness and curiosity. We approached it with humour,
even while taking the task seriously. It was a genuine joy.
— Matthew Burrows MBE - Painter & Founder of Artist Support Pledge 2025 Judge
When Rowan asked me to be involved in No Place Art’s inaugural Open Call, it
felt like the perfect fit. I first met him at a PV where his purple two-piece caught my eye. It was a small sign of the boldness and individuality he’s all about and has brought to this project. Choosing the works from the shortlisted finalists with Hannah was a challenge due to the number, quality and range of works selected. It was however remarkably straightforward in that we shared a strong instinct for what stood out and clear vision of what was required to make this show exceptional. The real challenge lies ahead in the hang itself. We have just one day to choreograph the works into dialogue, to let them speak in harmony. We’ll be relying on intuitive curation, trust, and the kind of teamwork that brings an exhilarating energy, like the last rehearsal before curtain-up, when everything clicks into place.
— Lara Bowen - Artist & Curator 2025 Curator
